Tech Support Pop-Up Scam

A scary browser pop-up claims your computer is infected with viruses and displays a 'Microsoft' or 'Apple' phone number. Calling it connects you to scammers who request remote access to your computer.

While browsing, a victim's browser is hijacked by a malicious ad or script that displays a full-screen warning designed to look like a Windows or macOS system alert, complete with fake virus scan animations, alarming sound effects, and a phone number to call for "urgent" support. The pop-up is often built to lock or freeze the browser so it can't easily be closed, pressuring the victim to call the number, where a scammer posing as Microsoft or Apple support talks them into installing remote-access software, then charges for fake "repairs" or uses the access to steal financial information.

• A pop-up claims to be from Microsoft, Apple, or your ISP and lists a phone number to call.
• The browser appears frozen or won't close normally, with a countdown timer or alarm sound.
• You're asked to install remote-access software like AnyDesk or TeamViewer for a stranger.
• Payment is requested via gift card, wire transfer, or a "protection plan" subscription.

• Never call a phone number shown in a browser pop-up.
• Legitimate companies like Microsoft and Apple do not make unsolicited support calls.
• Close the browser tab and restart your browser to clear the pop-up.
• Never allow remote access to your computer from an unsolicited caller.
