Fake Antivirus / Scareware Scam

A pop-up or fake scan result falsely claims your device is riddled with viruses and pressures you to buy bogus security software or call a "support" number, which leads straight into a tech support scam.

A pop-up ad or malicious website displays a fake "scan" that rapidly fills the screen with alarming red warnings claiming dozens of viruses were found. It urges the victim to immediately purchase a specific antivirus program to "clean" the device, and paying often either does nothing, installs real malware disguised as security software, or funnels the victim into calling a number that leads directly into a tech support scam where a scammer requests remote access.

• Flashing warnings, sirens, or a countdown pressuring immediate purchase.
• A prompt to buy security software directly from the pop-up itself.
• A phone number displayed to call for "immediate removal."

• Real antivirus software doesn't sell itself through browser pop-ups.
• Close the browser tab or restart your device rather than clicking anything in the pop-up.
• Only install security software directly from a vendor's official website.
• Run a scan with security software you installed yourself if you're worried about infection.
