Sextortion Scam

A scammer coerces or tricks a victim into sharing intimate photos or video, then threatens to release them to friends, family, or publicly unless paid, often escalating demands after the first payment.

A scammer, often posing as an attractive stranger, quickly builds rapport online and convinces the victim to share intimate photos or video, or in some cases records a video call without the victim's knowledge or uses a fabricated image. Once they have the material, the scammer reveals their real intent, threatening to send the images to the victim's friends, family, or employer unless a payment is made, and frequently continues demanding more money even after the first payment is sent.

• A new online contact pushes quickly toward exchanging intimate photos or video.
• A sudden shift from friendly conversation to threats and demands for payment.
• Screenshots or a list of your social media contacts are shown as proof they can reach them.
• Demands continue or increase even after a payment is made.

• Stop all contact and payment — paying rarely stops the threats and often increases them.
• Report the account to the platform and preserve evidence with screenshots.
• Contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children or local law enforcement, especially if a minor is involved.
• Remember you are the victim of a crime, not someone at fault for being deceived.
